MagSafe Compatible vs Made for MagSafe: What It Means on a Case

Almost every case listing on the internet says "MagSafe compatible." Few explain what that phrase actually requires, which is close to nothing. Here is what the label covers, what it doesn't, and how to tell in about five seconds whether a case has a real magnet ring or just an optimistic product description.

The short answer: Made for MagSafe is Apple's paid certification. MagSafe compatible is an unverified description that anyone can print on a listing. Qi2 is an open standard using the same magnet geometry. Only the first is checked by anyone.

What does MagSafe compatible actually mean?

Three labels get used interchangeably, and they describe three different things. Only one is a certification.

Made for MagSafe is Apple's licensed programme. The manufacturer pays for MFi certification and Apple verifies magnet strength, alignment and charging behaviour. On chargers, it's the label that unlocks full wattage.

MagSafe compatible is a description, not a certification. It means the product carries a magnet array positioned to line up with the ring inside your iPhone. On a well-built case this behaves identically to a certified one. On a badly built one it can mean the magnets are weak, misaligned, or absent entirely.

Qi2 is the open standard from the Wireless Power Consortium, launched at the end of 2023. Apple contributed MagSafe's magnetic profile to it, so Qi2 uses the same ring geometry, which is why a magnetic iPhone case snaps onto a Qi2 charger exactly as it does onto a MagSafe one. Qi2 25W arrived in 2025 and raised the ceiling from 15W to 25W.

Your case isn't a charger

This is where the confusion comes from. Wattage limits, certification tiers and charging speeds are properties of chargers. A case doesn't charge anything. It's a passive layer sitting between two magnets and two coils. So a case has two jobs, and neither is electrical.

Job one: hold the magnets in the right place. A MagSafe compatible case has its own ring of magnets moulded into the shell, aligned with the phone's. That's what lets a wallet, a car mount or a battery pack snap on and stay on.

Job two: stay out of the way. Magnetic force and inductive charging both fall off sharply with distance. A case that's too thick, or that hides a metal plate or a credit card behind the phone, degrades both. Thickness is the variable that matters, not branding.

How can I tell if a case has magnets?

Three checks, no tools required.

Read for the word "ring." A case with real magnets describes a magnet array or ring. A case without them says "works with wireless charging," which is true of a paper bag, because the phone's own magnets are doing the work through the plastic.

Check the snap. Put a MagSafe or Qi2 accessory on it. A proper case grabs firmly and doesn't slide when you tilt the phone. A magnet-free case lets the accessory drift, because the pull is crossing an extra layer of plastic before it reaches the phone.

Look for a magnet outline. Hold the inside of the case up to the light. Most cases with a real array show a faint circular seam where it's set into the shell.

Does a tough case make charging worse?

Not for attachment, and not at ordinary speeds. A dual-layer tough case is thicker than a slim shell, so the magnet array has to be engineered into the design rather than added afterwards. What kills wireless charging isn't dual-layer protection. It's a metal ring sticker, a card tucked behind the phone, or a cheap shell with no magnets pretending otherwise.

What this means when you're buying

If you use a magnetic wallet, a car vent mount or a battery pack, magnets are the whole point of the case and you should verify them. If you only ever charge on a cable or a flat pad, the label barely matters.

And if you're comparing two cases at similar prices, the honest tiebreaker is rarely the charging spec. It's whether the case is one you actually want to look at two hundred times a day.

The honest limitation

Two things we should say plainly, because they cut against us.

First, we are MagSafe compatible rather than Made for MagSafe. We haven't paid for Apple's certification, which means our magnet strength is our claim rather than Apple's finding. By the standard set out above, you should treat that with the same scepticism you'd apply to anyone else's listing, and use the three checks.

Second, thickness has a cost at the top charging tier. At 15W a dual-layer case makes no practical difference. At the 25W tier, charger manufacturers advise cases under roughly 2mm for peak speed, and a tough case is thicker than that by definition. Attachment and charging both still work. Maximum speed may not.
