You bought a clear case because you liked the colour of your phone. Some months later it's the colour of weak tea. This is the most common complaint in phone accessories, and the reason phone cases turn yellow has nothing to do with dirt, which is why cleaning it never works.
The short answer: clear cases yellow because UV light chemically degrades the TPU plastic itself. The colour change happens inside the material, not on its surface, so there is nothing to clean off. No hack reverses it, and the only real variables are sun exposure and whether the manufacturer paid for UV stabilisers.
Why do clear phone cases turn yellow?
Clear cases are almost always made from TPU, thermoplastic polyurethane, or a TPU blend. It's a genuinely good material: flexible, grippy, excellent at absorbing impact. It has one weakness, and it's permanent.
TPU degrades through photo-oxidation. UV light breaks the polymer chains, and the fragments react with oxygen to form compounds that absorb light differently than the original material did. The result reads to your eye as yellow. Heat accelerates it, and so do the oils from your skin, which is why the yellowing usually shows first around the edges where you grip the phone.
The important consequence: the discolouration is in the material, not on it. There is nothing to lift off. This is why every cleaning method fails.
Can you clean a yellowed phone case?
No. And it's worth going through the popular fixes, because three of the four make things worse.
| Method | What it does | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Baking soda and vinegar | Removes surface grime only | No effect on yellowing |
| Bleach or peroxide | Lightens briefly, degrades the polymer further | Makes it worse |
| Alcohol or acetone | Attacks TPU directly | Cloudy, tacky case |
| Leaving it in sunlight | Applies the exact cause | Makes it worse |
| Mild soap and water | Removes grime that exaggerates early yellowing | Useful, but not a fix |
What actually slows it down?
You can't stop it, but you can delay it.
Keep the phone out of direct sun when it's sitting somewhere for hours. A car dashboard is the worst place a clear case can live, combining maximum UV with maximum heat.
Wash your hands before long sessions, since skin oils are a real contributor to edge yellowing.
And wipe the case with mild soap and water regularly. It won't prevent yellowing, but it removes the grime that makes early yellowing look worse than it is.
The largest variable isn't anything you do, though. It's whether the manufacturer added UV stabilisers to the material in the first place. Those cost money, and brands that paid for them tend to say so on the product page. Two clear cases at different prices can behave completely differently over a year for that reason alone.
How long before a clear case goes yellow?
Nobody can give you an honest number, and anyone who does is guessing. It depends almost entirely on how much UV the case sees and how the material was made.
A case that lives in a pocket in northern Europe behaves very differently from one that sits on a dashboard in southern Spain. What's reliable is the direction of travel: it's one-way, it starts at the edges you hold, and it never gets better.
The structural point
Clear is the only case construction with a built-in expiry date. Every other type ages by scuffing or wearing, which is gradual and often looks fine. Clear ages by changing colour, against a phone you chose specifically so you could see it, so the failure is impossible to ignore.
This is the main reason we don't make clear cases. A printed case doesn't yellow in the same visible way, because there's no transparency to lose. On our cases the artwork sits under a sealed high-gloss finish, which does two jobs: it protects the print from keys and pockets, and it shields it from the same UV exposure that degrades clear TPU. The case still ages, but it ages by wearing rather than by discolouring.
The full material comparison is in tough case vs clear case vs silicone, and the materials themselves in polycarbonate vs TPU. If you want colour that stays put, Lemon Art and Lime Art from Fruit & Nature are the brightest things we make.
Should you keep using a yellowed case?
Structurally, mild yellowing doesn't mean the case has stopped protecting. The shock absorption is largely intact early on. But heavy discolouration signals the polymer has degraded meaningfully, and degraded TPU is more brittle than fresh TPU. At that point it's doing less than you think in a drop, and it's worth replacing.
The honest limitation
We don't make clear cases, so we have an obvious interest in this argument. Worth weighing accordingly: everything above about photo-oxidation is settled polymer chemistry rather than our opinion, but the conclusion that you should therefore buy a printed case is us selling you something.
And a printed case isn't immune to UV. Our TPU is the same family of material, it just isn't doing a job that requires transparency. The artwork sits under a sealed finish that shields it, but a case left on a dashboard all summer will still age faster than one that doesn't. Yellowing is the failure you can see; it isn't the only one.
If what you actually want is to see your phone's colour, no printed case solves that. A clear case with UV stabilisers, treated as a consumable and replaced when it turns, is a perfectly rational purchase.
FAQ
Why do clear phone cases turn yellow?
UV light breaks down the TPU plastic they're made from through photo-oxidation. Heat and skin oils speed it up. It's a chemical change inside the material, not dirt on the surface.
Can you clean a yellowed phone case?
No. Because the discolouration is a change in the plastic itself, cleaning removes surface grime but cannot reverse the yellowing.
How long before a clear case goes yellow?
There's no reliable figure. It depends on UV exposure, heat and whether the manufacturer used UV stabilisers. A case kept in a pocket lasts far longer than one left on a dashboard.
Do printed or coloured cases turn yellow too?
Not in the same visible way. Without transparency there's nothing to discolour, and a sealed finish protects the artwork from the same UV exposure.
Does a yellowed case still protect my phone?
Mild yellowing, largely yes. Heavy discolouration means the polymer has degraded, and degraded TPU is more brittle, so it absorbs less in a drop.
