The magnets are the easy part. Every decent case has them. What separates an accessory ecosystem that works from one that keeps sliding off is thickness, weight and where the load sits, and a dual-layer tough case changes all three. Here's what holds, and what doesn't.
The short answer: yes, MagSafe accessories work with a tough case as long as the case has its own magnet array moulded into the shell. Wallets, chargers and stands hold reliably. Battery packs and ring grips need a firmer seat. Cases relying on the phone's magnets through plain plastic are the ones that drop things.
Why does case thickness affect MagSafe?
Magnetic force falls off sharply with distance. Not gradually, sharply. A slim shell puts perhaps a millimetre between the accessory magnet and the phone's; a dual-layer tough case puts more, because there's a rigid polycarbonate shell and a shock-absorbing liner in between.
The fix isn't a thinner case. It's building the magnet array into the shell itself so the ring sits as close to the outer surface as the construction allows, at full strength. That's the difference between a case designed for MagSafe and one that merely permits it, and it's why some tough cases hold a wallet fine while others drop one the moment the phone goes in a pocket.
Which MagSafe accessories hold best?

Card wallets are the best-behaved accessory by a distance. If you carry two or three cards and want to leave the actual wallet at home, this one just works.
Battery packs are the heaviest thing most people attach and the most common thing to slide. Two things help: keep the pack centred on the ring rather than offset, and be realistic about pocketing the phone with one attached, because that's where they get knocked loose.
Dashboard mounts in summer deserve a note. The magnets themselves are fine at car temperatures, but adhesive-mounted accessories are not, and a phone left on a hot dash is bad for the battery regardless of the case.
What breaks MagSafe attachment?
A card behind the phone. Not in the wallet, tucked between the phone and the case. It adds distance and can interfere with charging. The single most common self-inflicted MagSafe problem.
Stick-on metal rings. If a case needs an adhesive metal ring to hold accessories, the case doesn't have magnets. The ring is a workaround, it sits proud, and it usually blocks wireless charging.
Stacking. Wallet plus grip plus pack on one array asks a single ring of magnets to do three jobs. Pick one at a time.
Do MagSafe accessories work with Qi2 chargers?
Yes, and the standard has moved on since Qi2 launched. Qi2 arrived in 2023 with the Magnetic Power Profile, which added a ring of alignment magnets and standardised 15W magnetic charging across brands. In 2025 the Wireless Power Consortium finalised Qi2 25W, sometimes called Qi2.2, which raises the ceiling to 25W while keeping magnetic alignment at the core.
The ring geometry is the same as MagSafe's, so a magnetic iPhone case snaps onto a Qi2 charger exactly as it does onto a MagSafe one. As Belkin sets out, the practical difference is openness rather than speed: MagSafe is proprietary to Apple with closed accessory certification, while Qi2 25W carries cross-platform certification for Android and iOS, and Qi2 25W chargers remain backward compatible with Qi2 devices at up to 15W.
If you're buying a charger today rather than a case, Qi2 25W is the more future-proof purchase, and it makes no difference to which case you choose.

The honest limitation
We used to say dual-layer protection and full magnetic function involve no trade-off at all. That was too neat, and the arrival of 25W charging is why.
Thickness has always cost you a little magnetic holding force, which is why the array is built into the shell instead of relying on the phone's. But at the 25W tier, charger manufacturers now advise keeping cases under roughly 2mm for peak speed, and Anker suggests removing cases thicker than 2.5mm for optimal performance. A dual-layer tough case is thicker than a slim shell by definition.
In practice that means attachment and charging both work, and on an older iPhone drawing 15W you're unlikely to notice anything. On an iPhone 16 or 17 chasing the full 25W, a tough case may cost you some charging speed compared with a bare phone or a 1.5mm shell. If wireless charging at maximum speed matters more to you than drop protection, a tough case is the wrong choice, and we'd rather say so than let you find out.
